HOW WILL YOU ASSESS THE EUSTACHIAN TUBE PATENCY?

The following are the different methods of assessing Eustachian tube patency:

  1. Bedside test: Put some dye/ear drops e.g. chloromycetin in the ear. If the bitter taste in mouth occurs in case of perforation, the tube is patent.
  2. Valsalva manoeuvre
  3. Eustachian tube catheterization
  4. Tyonbee manouevre:
    – During the ostoscopy, patient is asked to swallow with closed nose and mouth, thus creating a negative pressure causing retraction of TM if the tube is patent.
  5. Politzers Method:
-Politzer ‘s bag with nozzle is inserted into the nostril and both nostrils are compressed

The patient takes a sip of water in his mouth and is asked to swallow

Press the bag as he swallows and air enter the middle ear with the feeling of popping up sensation
  6. Siegalization
  7. By injecting radio-opaque dye and xray
  8. Eustachian tube endoscopy
  9. Sonotubometry
  10. Frenzeio manouevre:
-Close the mouth and the nose →Move the togue up to the palate → One can hear the click and movement of TM can be appreciated if ET is patent.
  11. Impedence audiometry
  12. Computerized tomography
  13. MRI
