The following are the different methods of assessing Eustachian tube patency:
- Bedside test: Put some dye/ear drops e.g. chloromycetin in the ear. If the bitter taste in mouth occurs in case of perforation, the tube is patent.
- Valsalva manoeuvre
- Eustachian tube catheterization
- Tyonbee manouevre:
– During the ostoscopy, patient is asked to swallow with closed nose and mouth, thus creating a negative pressure causing retraction of TM if the tube is patent. - Politzers Method:
-Politzer ‘s bag with nozzle is inserted into the nostril and both nostrils are compressed
↓
The patient takes a sip of water in his mouth and is asked to swallow
↓
Press the bag as he swallows and air enter the middle ear with the feeling of popping up sensation - Siegalization
- By injecting radio-opaque dye and xray
- Eustachian tube endoscopy
- Sonotubometry
- Frenzeio manouevre:
-Close the mouth and the nose →Move the togue up to the palate → One can hear the click and movement of TM can be appreciated if ET is patent. - Impedence audiometry
- Computerized tomography
- MRI
