PRE-OPERATIVE BOWEL PREPARATION
OPERATIONS NEEDING FULL BOWEL PREPARATIONS ARE:
- Colonoscopy
- Rectoplexy
- Right or Left hemicolectomy
- Pancolectomy
- Sigmoidectomy
- Anterior resection
- Abdominoperineal resection
- Hartman’s reversal
OPERATIONS NOT REQUIRING ANY BOWEL PREPARATION:
- Oesophago-duodenoscopy
- ERCP
- Closure ileostomy
OPERATIONS REQUIRING PHOSPHATE ENEMA ON THE DAY OF SURGERY:
- Haemorrhoidectomy
- Examination under general anaesthesia
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy
- Proctoscopy
- Anal fissure
HOW DO WE PREPARE BOWEL PRE-OPERATIVELY?
- Give 1 sachet of Picolax a day before surgery at 8:00 and 14:00.
- Picolax=sodium picosulphate.
- Alternatively, we can also use magnesium citrate.
- Patient can eat low residue foods whilst taking bowel preparation.
