PRE-OPERATIVE BOWEL PREPARATION

OPERATIONS NEEDING FULL BOWEL PREPARATIONS ARE:

  1. Colonoscopy
  2. Rectoplexy
  3. Right or Left hemicolectomy
  4. Pancolectomy
  5. Sigmoidectomy
  6. Anterior resection
  7. Abdominoperineal resection
  8. Hartman’s reversal

OPERATIONS NOT REQUIRING ANY BOWEL PREPARATION:

  1. Oesophago-duodenoscopy
  2. ERCP
  3. Closure ileostomy

OPERATIONS REQUIRING PHOSPHATE ENEMA ON THE DAY OF SURGERY:

  1. Haemorrhoidectomy
  2. Examination under general anaesthesia
  3. Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  4. Proctoscopy
  5. Anal fissure

HOW DO WE PREPARE BOWEL PRE-OPERATIVELY?

  • Give 1 sachet of Picolax a day before surgery at 8:00 and 14:00.
  • Picolax=sodium picosulphate.
  • Alternatively, we can also use magnesium citrate.
  • Patient can eat low residue foods whilst taking bowel preparation.
