What are the serological tests done in case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma for the diagnosis and the prognosis?

The association of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with Ebstein Barr virus is supported by:

  • The presence of a humoral immune response in patient with NPC against EBV determined antigens including the structural antigens such as the viral capsid antigens (VCA), early antigens (EA) and nuclear antigen (EBNA)
  • The presence of EB viral makers, EB viral DNA and nuclear antigens in NPC tumours cells. However EBV have yet to be observed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells from biopsy samples.
